Digitally Re-Created VHS Subtitles
September 13, 2015
This is a set of subtitles for Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995–1996) based on the original VHS tapes released by ADV Films.
- Translation errors from the VHS tapes have been corrected.
- See also: Why The VHS Translation
These subtitles are designed to be used with the only digital release of the original version of the series that made it to North America and Europe: the Perfect Collection.
- Perfect Collection video quality has been improved.
- More then twenty shots have been restored.
- See also: Why The Perfect Collection
Timestamps were copied from the Perfect Collection DVDs and edited to match the subtitle breaks from the VHS subtitles.

What you’ll find here are subtitle files based on the VHS release that are designed to be used with the Perfect Collection DVDs, as well as scripts and images that will both improve video quality and restore certain shots to look how they did in the original version of the series, before ADV replaced them with their edits. There are also instructions on how to rip your DVDs to a video format that can be watched with subtitle such as these, but there are no actual video files here.

There are detailed instructions included in the download. Open the file titled “Start Here (Video Processing).pdf” located in the “Instructions” folder. See also the “Requirements” section of this website.

Having some serious issues getting these DVDs ready. Followed along mostly fine until the QTGMC step, but the website provided doesn’t show SMDegrain as a linked requirement anymore and I can’t find out how to navigate to where fftw3.dll is at all.

The installation process for AviSynth features changes from time to time, and is likely different now. I recommend using the exact same versions of the software specified in my guide—otherwise, my guide may not work, or you may get different results. But if that isn’t possible, then I recommend consulting with the VideoHelp Forum, as there are people there who know far more than I do about AviSynth, and video editing in general:
